Earth gave us a chance, so lets take care of it.

For reading this term our focus has been looking at a range of articles that all relate to the issue of Climate Change. Our hub has been looking at answering the question: How can we use our voice to affect change in order to protect our enviroment.

The books we read told us about how we are going to be eating bugs soon, how much landfill we use, how long it takes plastic to breakdown and decomposed and about green house gasses and that they get trapped into the atmosphere.

This has taught me what we are doing to our planet and how we are destroying it.

Please comment on if you are destroying the planet?

If you want to make a better place then look at yourself and make the change.

On the 8th of May Tumu hub had a special guest.  His name was Glenn Andrew. He workes for Vbase. His job is to take care of venues like Horncastle arena, Christhchurch staduim and Hagley oval. He said he used to use just one time plastic cups. One time means after you use it once it just goes in the trash. Then Vbase and some other companys joined up to make a plastic cup that can be used mutipel times. It costs more know for a beer but when you bring your cup back you get a dollar back. This has been very good so far. Before around 250,000 cups a year would go to waste. But this year they have already made $4,500.  Glenn said the next move to make is to make cups out of plants.

Do you know anyone that is helping the envorment?

Did I come first in cross counrty?

On the 2nd of May we had cross country. We had been praticing for the last couple weeks and now the hard work was going to pay off.

We all lined up, making our preditons on who would go to zones. On the trip down we were jumping on stones and annoying dogs. When we got there I jumped into a big green thing. Walter park was the park that the racing was happening in. Me and my friends had one big tarpaulin all to our selfs.

As we were waiting Aidan was throwing his water at Mostyn and Blake. As all the races for finshing up.  Miss Hansan said " All the Tumu children come over here." We did our warmups. My legs were shaking. I was about to run 2ks. Once we had lined up Miss Hansan said " On your marks, Go!"

We were off and away, I was in first for about the first 80-100 meters. Then Max Martin over took me. I was close to him for the first 500 meters then after that he just sprinted away from me. The first lap was done and I could just see him in sight.

I knew I had to speed up. So I started to run as fast as I could. As I was going past a flax bush, Arie and Dlyan scared me half to death. After I got back to the race and I was running past Luca he gave me his drink bottle to squirt in my mouth.

I had finished the race. Max got 1st and I got 2nd. Mostyn got third. Charlie 4th, Archie 5th and Lucas 6th.On the way back I was flicking stones with my drink bottle. Once we had got back to school it was luchtime. I can tell you one thing about cross country it is tough and I have to do it all again for zones, another 2k.

Where did you come in your cross counrty?

Facts about America.

Hello this is my information report on America. Tell me what I should add in it.

America report.
America is known for its 50 states. The largest one is texas and its smallest one is Rhode Island. The capital is Washington D.C, that’s where the whitehouse is.

The whitehouse is where the President lives. The current president of America is Donald trump. Before him it was Barack Obama. He was also the first black president. The first president was George Washington.

American football is the most popular sport to watch. Next is baseball then basketball. There are 32 teams in the Nfl (American football), 30 in the Nba (Basketball) and 15 in baseball.

Mexico is right under america and Canada is right above it. One of the most popular food in America is the American hotdog.

Have you ever done a information report?

Kindess matters, So lets show it.

Ladies and Gentlemen you are about to witness to best blog in the world.
PBL - Term 1

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about kindness and the big question was: How can we build community through our actions?

First, we explored some collaborative activities and discussed how we could include kindness and build a sense of community through our actions at camp. Next, we were organised into groups where we had to unpack the above question. In our groups we considered how we could spread community and kindness through our entire school community. We decided that we would offer something that was free and would make others happy.

We created an action plan and we came up with a idea that would get the Kakano kids and teachers happy. We thought about for a long time that we were going to do something like a bake sale. But with only cookies and lemonade. The thing that made us change our minds to doing games with Kakano was the teachers. They convinced us to bring the junior community into the school. So that gave us the idea of doing games. We found out that their was another group doing the same thing so we joined with them.

Reflection:
For our final product our group came up with doing fun and sensible games for the juniors. Doing exercise is great for the body.

We built a community with the junior school. We gave the kids lollipops. That means when they see us they will say we are the people that gave them lollipops.

I contributed by instructing them and I emailed the teachers to let them know what was going on.

I think the PBL might impact on others by learning new faces and games for the future.

What I learned about working with others was that sometimes it can be a struggle to work with them but at the end of the day we got the job done.

If you were in Kakano would you like to do games. If you would, what games.

PBL market day was the best.

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because the M&ms where lighter than the person that we made with the cubes.

In Literacy we learned to write up  science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My team made stress balls, lip scrub and we did a game called ultimate bean bag toss.

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was seeing all the other stands so I could buy stuff like doughnuts , lollies milkshakes and lots of other things.
Next time I would change what I did because if we did something like popcorn we would of made more money.
What would you like to do at the market?

The blog of greatnenss.

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;

What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas. Culture is what tradition you and your family do, it means what type of food you might eat and what we just do it our everyday life. Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage. I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.

In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on Maori legends. I read Maui and the Goddess of death. I have written my own legend called how the Rhino got his Horn.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organising the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

It was all fun in general my favourite part was that when we had to get dressed up. For our production I contributed by dancing in the mission impossible and also the victory royal I think the show might impact on others by having fun but still working
. What I learned about working with others was to share talents and make up our own dance.
Have you ever starred in a prodution before?
